Leibniz construit, teste et vérifie sans cesse la pertinence et la cohérence de sa philosophie en la rapportant aux conclusions des autres disciplines. Cette méthode heuristique nourrit son dialogue avec les sciences mathématiques et physiques; moins connus, les enjeux révélés par la réforme moderne de la médecine et la chimie suscitent une interrogation sur la vie et la qualité. Ces sciences expérimentales s'avèrent en effet cruciales pour une philosophie de la nature qui cherche à concilier le mécanisme et le finalisme (...) à travers les concepts d'entéléchie et de monade. Elles obligent en outre à préciser la logique de l'expérience, la fonction de la raison, le statut des principes explicatifs (loi, cause, éléments, analogie). Enfin, elles exigent un fondement qui permette de rapporter les phénomènes organiques à leur véritable origine: la vie. Ce programme se réalise de façon systématique dans la controverse qu'entretiennent Leibniz et Stahl au sujet d'une philosophie de la nature capable de prendre acte des découvertes modernes de la médecine et de la chimie, tout en fondant ces connaissances sur une théorie générale de la substance et de la vie. Using placebos in day-to-day practice is an ethical problem. This paper summarises the available epidemiological evidence to support this difficult decision. Based on these data we propose to differentiate between placebo and “knowledge framing”. While the use of placebo should be confined to experimental settings in clinical trials, knowledge framing — which is only conceptually different from placebo — is a desired, expected and necessary component of any doctor-patient encounter. Examples from daily practice demonstrate both, the need to investigate the (...) effects of knowledge framing and its impact on ethical, medical, economical and legal decisions. (shrink)

Ernst Fraenkels Neopluralismus zählt zu den 'Klassikern'. Worin zeigt sich seine Anschlussfähigkeit? Antipluralistische Traditionsbestände sind wirkmächtig geblieben. 'Lobbyismus' hat immer noch einen schlechten 'Beigeschmack'. Das Problem von Grundkonsens und Streit stellt sich insbesondere bei politischen Gegnern, die mit 'Freund-Feind-Ideologien' agieren.

Dans ce texte de 1923, Cassirer cherche à réaliser le programme échafaudé par Haym dans sa biographie de Humboldt publiée en 1856, mais qui n’a selon lui jamais été accompli dans le détail, à savoir montrer l’influence du système critique de Kant, et notamment de sa Critique de la raison pure, sur la philosophie du langage de Wilhelm von Humboldt. La première partie expose l’objection qui ne manque pas d’être spontanément soulevée à la vue d’un tel projet. Dans le (...) système critique, organisé autour des deux centres de la nature et de la liberté, il n’y a en effet pas de place pour le langage. Une telle situation apparaît d’ailleurs surprenante lorsque, comme le fait la seconde partie de ce texte, on place la Critique à côté des grands systèmes philosophiques des XVI e, XVII e et XVIII e siècles, où le langage constituait un thème important. En quoi la Critique de Kant, éloignée des problèmes du langage, pourrait-elle dès lors avoir une influence véritable sur Humboldt? La réponse vient une fois la place de Humboldt définie dans cette reconstruction historique. En effet, sa philosophie du langage résout précisément le conflit entre Kant et son idéalisme critique d’un côté, et Herder et sa conception de la vie et de la spontanéité de l’esprit de l’autre. La troisième partie tente dès lors de montrer à quel point cet idéalisme critique – notamment par le biais de son motif transcendantal, comprenant un nouveau concept d’objet, d’objectivité et de sujet, et de sa paire matière/forme – travaille de manière souterraine la philosophie du langage de Humboldt, ce qui aboutit en retour à réévaluer la place de la Critique dans l’histoire des problèmes du langage. Die University of Tokyo hatte mich zu einem Vortrag über die im Rahmen der Kritischen Gesamtausgabe als Band 9 (in drei Teilbänden) erscheinende Neuausgabe von Ernst Troeltschs “Soziallehren der christlichen Kirchen und Gruppen” eingeladen. Das mir vorgegebene Thema lautete: “The Significance of Troeltsch’s Soziallehren for the Present”’. Im ersten Teil skizziere ich die Genese von Troeltschs christentumshistorischem Hauptwerk. Im zweiten Teil geht es um die zentralen Themen seines “Lieblingsbuches”. Im dritten Teil werden einige seiner handschriftlichen Zusätze und Marginalien kurz (...) vorgestellt, die die 2020 erscheinende Kritische Ausgabe der “Soziallehren” erstmals zugänglich macht. Abschließend entfalte ich eine Antwort auf die Frage, warum es sich auch heute noch lohnt, Ernst Troeltsch zu lesen. (shrink)
